The long rumored DS revamp has been officially unveiled by Nintendo at their press event in Japan earlier tonight. The new model, dubbed the Nintendo DSi, will lack the GBA slot present in previous iterations of the handheld, thus becoming 12% thinner. The DSi will also be sporting a sleek new 3.25 inch screen, internal memory, an SD slot, a built in web browser, an external 3megapixel camera, an internal VGA camera and photo editing capabilities.
Many have speculated that with the removal of the GBA slot and the introduction of onboard memory that Nintendo will offer a service similar to the virtual console on Wii in order to allow users to play GBA, as well as other titles, on the device.
The DSi will come in two colors at launch, matte black and matte white, and will retail for 18,900 yen ($180 USD). Oh, and did I mention that it's coming out in Japan in less than a month?
No word yet on a North American release date but it's not unlikely we'll be hearing something about it at their upcoming American press event. If the release date is out of sight though, I'd say it's appropriate to hit the internet hard and import one, what do you think?
